Bathroom Remodel Cost Calculator

What a bathroom costs in Los Angeles, from a refresh to a primary suite with the plumbing moved.

Bathrooms are small rooms with a lot of trades in them, which is why cost per square foot runs high. The two things that move the number most are how much tile there is and whether the drains move.

Where it goesRange

This is a planning estimate, not a quote and not a bid. The rates behind it come from Los Angeles County projects and published 2026 cost data, reviewed 2026-10-29. Questions about this estimate

Why is a bathroom so expensive per square foot?

Because every trade in the house shows up in a room the size of a parking space. Plumbing, electrical, tile, waterproofing, glass, carpentry and paint all work in 45 square feet, and most of it has to happen in sequence rather than at once.

Is a curbless shower worth the extra?

It looks better, it is easier to clean, and it is the right call if anyone using it may have mobility issues later. It costs more because the floor has to be recessed and the waterproofing is less forgiving. On a slab house it costs more again.

Do I need a permit?

If you move plumbing, add circuits or change the fan or window, yes. Swapping a vanity and retiling in place generally does not.

How long will I be without the bathroom?

A refresh is 2 to 3 weeks. A full replacement is 4 to 6 weeks. A primary bathroom with the layout changed is 6 to 10 weeks.
